Gustavo Tomás, originally from Portugal, now lives in Leicester, England. Being far from his home country hasn’t stopped his match worn Portugal National Team collection grow to over 150 shirts.
Why collect Portugal shirts?
Well… I’m Portuguese and the passion for the Portugal National Team came from my Grandad who I used to watch all the games with. Now that I’m living abroad the passion become even bigger. With this passion, there was only a small step to collecting Portugal shirts.
What was the first shirt in your collection?
My first shirt was bought 9 years ago. I received it from a very special friend and collector that taught me a lot about shirts, unfortunately, he is no longer with us. The shirt is Portugal model for 1979 to 1983 and was worn by Diamantino Miranda, a legend of Benfica.
Which is your favourite shirt?
So difficult! I need to choose two… The oldest shirt in my collection which is a shirt worn between 1948 to 1951. I bought this shirt from a company that specializes in buying house/office contents. Luckily for me, within the contents of one house, they found this shirt!
The other is of course the shirt worn by Portugal in the 1966 World Cup. This was the first time Portugal reached a final stage of a big tournament and where Eusebio was introduced to the world.
Which is the rarest shirt in your collection?
Once again I need to choose two. The first one was only worn in the first half of the game against France on the 8th of March 1978 and the model was never worn again! Until today I still don’t know the reason behind this.
The second one is more recent and relates to the Stand Up Speak Up campaign launched by Thierry Henry in 2005. This shirt was worn by full back Rogério Matias in a single game against the Republic of Ireland.
Is there shirt you would like for your collection but don’t have yet?
The one I’m on the hunt for is the white model worn against USSR in the 1966 World Cup. Not an easy one to find!
