Baris Demirkaya lives in Germany and has more than 77 Galatasaray SK football shirts in his collection
Why collect Galatasaray shirts?
I was born a Galatasaray supporter. My uncle went to every match in the Ali Sami Yen stadium in the 80’s, and I, as his first nephew, began to support the club because he was such a big fan. Unfortunately the stadium, named after the founder of Galatasaray, which first fuelled my passion for the club was demolished for a new home in 2011.
What was the first shirt in your collection?
The first in my collection and the shirt that started my collecting habit was the 1999-00 away with Hakan Sükür printing. In this season this away shirt was worn against Arsenal in the UEFA Cup Final victory. My cousin gave it to me as a present in the middle of the season. I was 14 years old and that was one of the best moments in my life to win the UEFA Cup. I will never forget the moment.
Which is your favourite shirt?
My favourite shirt has to be one of my many match worn shirts. I would have to say my Cláudio Taffarel goalkeeper shirt from the 2000-01 season. It was worn by him in a friendly match against Rapid Bukarest which was played for the brother of Mircea Lucescu. Not only is the shirt match worn but I managed to get him to sign the shirt and therefore it has immense sentimental value. The USA ’94 World Cup was one of the first International tournaments I remember and have loved the World Cup winning Brazil team, including Taffarel, ever since. He was instrumental in our UEFA Cup winning team the season before and although we didn’t win the league this year, we won the European Super Cup beating the mighty Real Madrid in Monaco.
