Nicolas Garcia Insua lives in Argentina and has more than 60 Deportivo La Coruña shirts in his collection.
Why collect Deportivo shirts?
My grandparents were born in La Coruña before they moved to Argentina. They told me so much about the city and therefore I have a special feeling for the city and especially for the city’s club, Deportivo La Coruña.
What was the first shirt in your collection?
The very first Depor shirt I managed to pick up was the 1999-00 home shirt with official printing of José Oscar Flores or Turu Flores as he wore on his shirt. This was a very special shirt as it was my favourite player from this season as he was from Argentina. The shirt will always remind me of the 5-2 victory over Real Madrid – who won the Champions League this season – and being crowned the La Liga Champions for the first time in the Branquiazuis history.
A few year after I managed to meet my hero and get him to sign the shirt which makes it an even more special piece in my collection.
What is your favourite shirt?
My favourite is a match shirt worn by Juan Carlos Valerón, one of the greatest players to play for the club and most popular amongst Depor fans. He played for us for thirteen seasons and this is the shirt from his very first season at the club, 2000-01. In this season we competed in the Champions League and reached the Champions League Quarter Finals. We finished top of both the first and second group stages before being beaten by a strong Leeds United team. It will always be one of my favourite seasons even though we didn’t win the La Liga title – finishing second to Real Madrid – because of this European adventure.
